5 web sites to help you learn English – free !

My favourite ‘free’ sites to learn English

Learning English is becoming easier! You can never escape the hard work, but today, there is so much ‘English’ around to help you.

I’m always amazed at all the fabulous websites that offer great materials to help you learn or practice English, no matter where you are in the world, and much of it is free.

Some of the language learning sites are provided by major British educational organisations like the British Council, while others are created by individual teachers or educationalists who give their time and materials completely free. (Thank you!)

So, here you have my favourite free sites. Good Luck !

Spanish Courses + fun activities in Spain

Summer’s gone, vive Spanish courses

September – our busy summer season is over. Crossroads Languages’ clients – young and old – are back from their exciting language trips and they all have great things to say about our partner language schools, their warm, helpful host families and the fun social activities and visits they took part in. We’ll do a post in a few weeks to share their experiences.

For me, September is also the time when I think about escaping for a few weeks, when those fabulously hot places, like the South of Spain, become cool enough for me to survive in.

And I’m clearly not alone, as our partner Spanish schools in Spain are still buzzing with courses and activities for language learners.

So, let’s look at just five of my favourite activities that you can combine with Spanish courses around Spain, just a few of the types of activities that I see on the crossroadslanguages.com site every day and I say – I’d love to do that!

In no particular order ….

Last day of the Olympics – Language quiz

Last day of the Olympics !

Test your knowledge of world languages.

Thank you all the great sportsmen who have gone for gold and made this an amazing event. Thank you the London 2012 organising committee for pulling it off, and thanks too to the UK and visiting public for cheering everything along.

Lord Coe promises us a fun closing party with a tribute to British music over the last decades, while the organisers of Rio 2016 promise an eight-minute segment in the Olympic Stadium with ‘joy and passion’.

And as Crossroads Languages is all about learning, and teaching, different languages, I’d like to close our Olympic blog posts with a quiz about world languages.

You can test yourself, or if you’re a teacher, you could use it for a ‘web search’ with teams of students competing against each other to find the answers. You can give out medals for the three top teams.

Summer’s here – have a great time on your language course – despite the weather!

How to make the most of your English course in England  – take a notebook, a dictionary ……and an umbrella!

A couple of weeks ago, when I was preparing this first blog post, I asked some ‘super teacher’ friends and a few students, to give me their top tips on how to have a successful language course abroad.

One of the tips from Wendy, an English teacher in Abu Dhabi, was ‘Equip yourself with a notebook and dictionary, and an umbrella!’

And I bet even she didn’t realise how important that umbrella was going to be in the UK this summer!

English summers are not always great, but this year ‘takes the biscuit*’ !

June was the wettest June on record, and then just when the first summer students arrived the whole country was hit by torrential rain and flooding.

If you’ve just arrived in England for your ‘summer’ English course, we hope that the warm welcome in the schools, the great lessons, fun activities and friendly British people will be able to make up for this awful weather.

And to help you get the most from your language programme, no matter which country you are studying in, here are a few tips:
